Your eye will always go to the darkest darks & the lightest lights

( Illusionistic Space ) is what
Space or depth indicated or implied on a two-dimensional surface through devices such as shading and perspective.

( chiar-‘oskyur-o ) is how
Chiaroscuro is a method for applying value to a two-dimensional piece of artwork to create the illusion of a three-dimensional solid form.
In this system, if light is coming in from one predetermined direction, then light and shadow will conform to a set of rules.

Basic qualities of shading:
-first establish the light and dark side (of positive shapes)
-identify cast shadow (always darkest at the base)
-back shading (reveals edges as the dark recedes)
-highlights are the lightest shape of a form (an intense reflection)
-reflected light (soft light of darker side)

BRUSH SHADING
Using soft graphite or charcoal, a stiff brush will move the dry media around like paint.
In the same way, the more "dust" or "dry pigment" you add, the more you can move around. For dark areas, this offers a very smooth and deep effect.

This technique works best applied in many layers, and as your brush fills up with dry pigment, you can then use this "tool" to softly shade lighter areas.

Basic Techniques of shading: (even tone or gradation of value)
-parallel lines "hatch"
-cross hatching
-smudging
-stippling
-eraser (elimination)
-random lines - In the detailing and final touches of a sketch,
random lines tend to become a part of using all 5 techniques in one
area. Bold, random lines can balance a drawing that is tight.

Basic Whites

Titanium White - titanium dioxide (oxide)

Most opaque white, perfect choice for direct painting but difficult for color mixing because it takes so much color to tint Titanium. It does not dry very quickly and is more Zinc white in this respect.

Flake White - basic carbonate of lead

Flake white has a heavy pigment and is regarded as the most reliable white on which to build a painting. It can be applied more heavily than other whites with less danger of cracking than other whites. Flake white dries well and is a "warm" white.

Zinc White - zinc oxide
It is a "bluish" (cold) white color, not nearly as strong and opaque as Titanium White. A slow drying white recommended for scumbling and alla prima painting.

Basic Blacks

Mars Black - iron oxide
A warm black, made from a heavier mineral pigment than the others.
Mars black is the blackest and is very opaque.

Bone or Ivory Black -
animal bones
Ivory black has a neutral brown undertone, and will absorb any single pigment mixed into it, providing a clean change in value. A beautiful black with transparent tinting qualities.

Lamp or Carbon Black - carbon
A blue-black with high tinting strength and can overpower when mixed with colour.

Oily Waste CanOILY RAG DISPOSAL FOR OIL PAINTERS
Natural Substances such as linseed or poppyseed oil act as polymers when hardened.
When paper towels or rags wet with these oils polymerize or harden, they can spontaneously combust.
It is safe to assume these safety precautions should be taken when using ALL oil mediums, mixtures of solvents & oils and polymers.
